Hotdoggers to bring Wienermobile to Ludington Street Cruise in Escanaba
ESCANABA — The iconic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will make a special appearance at the inaugural Ludington Street Cruise car show, set for May 29 and 30 in downtown Escanaba.
Event organizers say bringing the 27-foot long Wienermobile to the show has long been a goal.
“It’s an iconic vehicle—and at this point, you could call it a classic,” said Kurt Strassler, General Manager of Elmer’s County Market and a member of the Ludington Street Cruise committee. “They’ve tried for years to bring it to past car shows, so we’re excited to finally make it happen.”
The Ludington Street Cruise is carrying on the tradition of the former Krusin Klassics Fun Run, with a renewed focus on creating a fun, family-friendly event.
“A car show typically draws car enthusiasts, but we really want this to be something for the whole family,” Strassler said. “Along with the Wienermobile, we’ll have the Smokey and the Bandit tribute group, which adds a fun, interactive element for kids and families.”
The hot dog-on-a-bun shaped vehicle is driven by trained Hotdoggers who promote the Oscar Mayer brand by holding “Meat-and-Greets” and handing out weinerwhistles.
The Wienermobile, presented by Elmer’s County Market. will join the “Eastbound and Down” Smokey and the Bandit re-enactors, presented by local Edward Jones financial advisors.
Festivities kick off Friday, May 29, with a parade navigating around ongoing construction on Ludington Street. On Saturday, May 30, cars and motorcycles will line Ludington Street from 5th Street to Ludington Park.
Event Chair Justin Lauscher says attendees will have the chance to vote for their favorite vehicles using their cell phones, with entries spanning 12 categories—from pre-1960 classics to modern cars, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, and imports.
“The categories really cover just about everything,” Lauscher said. “There’s something for every type of vehicle and every kind of fan.”
Participants can register online at ludingtonstreetcruise.com or in person on Friday at Elmer’s County Market prior to the parade. The Wienermobile will also be on display at Elmer’s, participate in the Friday parade, and appear at the show on Saturday.
