On July 24, 1915 the S.S. Eastland, while still tied to the dock on the Chicago River, rolled away from the wharf and capsized with more than 2,500 people on board. The passengers were employees of the Western Electric Company looking forward to the excursion to their annual company picnic in Michigan City. 844 people lost their lives. 22 whole families were wiped out. It was Chicago’s greatest loss of life tragedy. It was the worst Great Lakes’ ship disaster of all time.
Carol Sundstrom, who has personal connections to the disaster, will be giving a lecture on the S.S. Eastland. Using archival photos, she will tell the story of the Eastland disaster through the eyes of the survivors and responders. Hear how this preventable tragic event happened, and why the largest Great Lakes’ ship disaster is unknown by most people.
Carol will present two programs about the S.S. Eastland, on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 2 o’clock and 6 o’clock at the museum.
