(UPDATE)
(PESHTIGO, WI.)–Marinette County Sheriff, Jerry Sauve released this information at approximately 8:20am. “At 12:10 this morning there was some typed of incident involving a male suspect and a handgun at a motel in the city of Marinette. At this point in the investigation it is yet unclear if this was some type of robbery attempt or domestic incident.” Sheriff Sauve also added, “Through investigative efforts the potential suspect was determined to possibly be at or near a residence on State Highway 64 in the Town of Peshtigo.” Sheriff’s deputies and Marinette City Police officers went to that location where they saw a male enter a vehicle and proceed west bound on Highway 64. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle at Schacht Road where the vehicle partially entered a ditch and the male suspect exiting the vehicle armed with a handgun, which placed the officers in danger. Sheriff Sauve said, “The suspect was shot and killed by officers; neither the two City of Marinette Police officers nor the two sheriff’s deputies involved were injured. The public is no longer in any danger however Highway 64 will be closed and detoured from County RW on the west and at the Marinette City Limits on the east for several hours while the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice conducts their investigation. The name of the deceased man and officers involved and other information will be released when it is appropriate.” The positive identification has been made on the deceased individual through several means and notification of the family as 35-year old Jesse Cole Shuping of Portsmouth, Virginia. Shuping had recently been in the Marinette area for the past month to six weeks. He spent time in a local shelter and had recently befriended a local person who had allowed him to stay at her residence. Shuping is a convicted felon from the State of Virginia and North Carolina and was presently on probation and parole and wanted on a Grand Larceny charge by Virginia authorities. The incident at the motel appeared to be an attempt by Shuping to collect a debt he believed was owed him by someone who was staying at the Budget Inn at 1301 Marinette Avenue in Marinette. The names of the officers involved in the incident continue to be withheld until their formal interviews with the Wisconsin Department of Justice in the coming week. Several departments assisted Marinette deputies including Marinette Police, Menominee Police, Peshtigo Police, Wisconsin State Patrol, Marinette County Dispatch, local EMS and Fire Services for outstanding and dedicated efforts Sheriff Jerry Sauve stated. Wisconsin Department of Justice is continuing their investigation.
