WisDOT North Central Region Road Construction Update
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) North Central Region provides interstate and state highway construction updates for the following counties in north central Wisconsin: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara and Wood counties.
Construction schedules may fluctuate pending weather conditions and crew availability.
Florence County
Highway: US 2
Location: Pewabic Street to County NN
Schedule: July 7 to Sept. 25, 2025
Project description: Crews will replace asphalt pavement, replace curb and gutter throughout the project, replace curb ramps that do not meet current ADA standards and extending sidewalks.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will:
- Work on concrete curb and sidewalks as well as restoration throughout downtown Florence
- Resurface US 2 north of Florence, near the intersection of 2nd Crossing Road
Traffic impacts (next 10 days):
- Traffic should expect minor influence from flagging operations while working on removals and concrete placement along US 2 within downtown Florence
- Traffic could be reduced to one lane during daylight hours while work is taking place but after hours will be brought back to two 12’ lanes.
- US 2 will also be reduced to a single lane, by use of temporary traffic signals, near the intersection of 2nd Crossing Road to allow the resurfacing of US 2. Access to 2nd Crossing Road, across from JR’s Bar & Pub will also be closed during the resurfacing work. The resurfacing work near 2nd Crossing Road is only expected to affect traffic for a few days this week, weather pending.

Forest County
Highway: US 8
Location: WIS 55 to Otter Creek Road
Schedule: April 14 to Oct. 31, 2025
Project description: The project will include:
- Milling the existing pavement and resurfacing it with new asphalt areas along US 8 within the project limits except for the section between Fire Keeper and Bug Lake roads.
- Removing the climbing lane from Grandview Avenue to High View Drive and improving storm water drainage in the area.
- Reconfiguring the lanes between Wildwood and Grandview avenues.
- Making profile and horizontal adjustments on US 8 between Fire Keeper and Bug Lake roads.
- Grading slopes and removing cable guard throughout the corridor at existing cable guard locations.
- Replacing several culvert pipes.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will:
- Continue installing erosion control and landscaping.
- Excavate/fill between Firekeeper Road and Indian Drive.
- Construct the new pedestrian box culvert will continue.
- Work on watermain and sewer will continue west of Kwe Da Kik Lane.
- Install cross culvert
- Begin construction of storm sewer west of High View Drive
- Continue building the phase 2 trail
- Sidewalk and curb will be removed near the west end of the project in Crandon.
- Continue installing trail culverts.
Traffic impacts:
- US 8 is closed to thru traffic from the intersection of WIS 55/WIS 32/US 8 in Crandon to the intersection of WIS 32/US 8 in Laona until Friday, Oct. 17
- No public traffic access from Firekeeper Road to just east of Indian Drive including the intersection of Kwe Da Kik Lane and Youngs Lane
- Traffic will encounter shoulder closures and flaggers at various times throughout the project limits listed above through Oct. 31.
- Temporary pedestrian facilities and a lane shift will be installed in Crandon.
