On Friday, September 20, 2024, the Iron Mountain Police Department responded to reports of an individual barricaded with a handgun on the north side of Iron Mountain. Upon arrival, Officers heard a gunshot fired in their direction from the basement of the residence.
Officers worked to communicate with the subject while ensuring the safety and security of the surrounding area. The Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T.), a multi–jurisdictional tactical unit consisting of Officers through the Dickinson County area, was called to the scene.
As C.I.R.T. arrived, another shot was fired from the basement. C.I.R.T. negotiators successfully established contact with the subject, but communication was later interrupted. The subject then exited the basement unexpectedly, armed with a handgun. C.I.R.T. Officers deployed less- than–lethal bean bag rounds to subdue the individual.
We are grateful for the swift actions of our C.I.R.T. team, which enabled a safe resolution to this potentially dangerous situation. We extend our appreciation to the Michigan State Police, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Kingsford Public Safety, Norway Police Department, Iron Mountain Fire Department, and Integrity Care EMS for their assistance.
The safety of our residents remains our top priority, and we want to assure the public that all necessary measures were taken to achieve a peaceful outcome.
