Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller reports that at 1:06 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2024, Marinette
County Dispatch received a call of a two-vehicle crash on County Highway B at County Highway W in
the Town of Grover.
The investigation indicates that a vehicle operated by Scott Mathis, age 46, of Pembine, Wisconsin was
traveling south on County Highway W and failed to stop for the stop sign at County Highway B.
Mathis collided with a vehicle traveling east driven by Elysia Kust, age 44, of Coleman, Wisconsin. Both
Elysia and a passenger, Mary Kust, age 73, of Coleman, Wisconsin sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
Inattentive driving and failure to stop at a stop sign appear to have been factors in the crash that remains
under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Marinette County District Attorney’s
Office, and the Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office. Also assisting Marinette County deputies
at the scene were members of the Wisconsin State Patrol, Grover Porterfield Fire
Department, Peshtigo Police Department, Bay Area Rescue, and the Marinette County Highway
Department.
This is the first fatal crash and the first and second fatalities related to a motor vehicle crash in Marinette
County in 2024.
