MARINETTE CIVIC CENTER POOL EVACUATED
[Marinette, WI]–An apparent pool chemical overload caused people using the pool to become ill Friday night. At approximately 7:30pm the pool circulating system was restarted after a power surge shut it down. People started exiting the water and were coughing. A call was made by an unknown person to Marinette County 911/Dispatch. The Marinette Fire Department and Hazardous Materials Response Team was dispatched along with ambulances from Bay Area Medical Center and Emergency Rescue Squad. Additional ambulances from Coleman, Brazeau, Crivitz, and Mid-County Services were called after initial assessment. Marinette Police Department blocked streets surrounding the Civic Center as a precaution. Twenty three people were triaged by EMS personnel at the Civic Center and transported to Bay Area Medical Center Emergency Room. Other people at the pool may have self-transported to the hospital as well, but it is unknown how many. The Civic Center is closed to the public until the pool systems can be inspected, which will occur tomorrow morning. The Civic Center reopened at their normal time Saturday, which is 1:00 pm.
