ONTONAGON, Mich. —A Michigan State Police trooper from the Wakefield Post saved a 12-year old who fell into the Ontonagon River. He was sent to to Elmer Park in the Village of Ontonagon. The girl had fallen from the boardwalk and into the river. Due to the buildup of ice on the shoreline, she was not able to climb out of the river. The victim was in the river for several minutes before assistance arrived. A citizen walking his dog found the girl semi-conscious and was able to call 911. The trooper determined the girl to be 10 to 12 years old, and also noticed she was suffering severe hypothermia, and required immediate medical attention. The victim was transported to Aspirus Hospital in Ontonagon by the trooper in his patrol vehicle. She was suffering a dangerously low internal body temperature. Medical personnel noted the troopers saved the girl’s life. They also noted the citizen who found the girl initially and who was quick to call 911 was a life safer.
