In a joint statement released today by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and Dickinson County Prosecuting Attorney, Lisa Richards, it was announced that an arrest mas made in connection with an an assault on a deputy sheriff that took place on Sunday, January 29, 2017. Police responded to a domestic violence complaint at a residence in Breitung Township just before 11:00 p.m.
the 23 year old suspect armed himself with a large fixed bladed knife within moments of officers arrival. Officers immediately engaged in efforts to disarm the suspect, who succeeded in stabbing on of the deputies in the midsection. Due to the fact that the officer was wearing a protective Kevlar vest, he was spared from life threatening injuries. The officer was later evaluated by personnel from Beacon Ambulance.
Matthew David Johnson, age 23, is charged with one count of Assault with Intent to Murder, four counts of Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing a Police Officer, two counts of Domestic Violence, and one count of Possession of Marijuana. The case is scheduled for a Probable Cause Conference on Feb. 9, 2017 at 1:45 p.m. and a Preliminary Examination on
Feb. 15, 2017 at 8:45 a.m. in the 95B District Court. Johnson is currently being held on a $750,000.00 bond. Attorney Michael Scholke of Iron Mountain was appointed to represent Johnson.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by troopers from the MI State Police – Iron Mountain Post.
