MARQUETTE — The body of missing Skandia Township resident was discovered in a wooded area north of the spot where his Chevrolet Astro van had been located earlier. According to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, a UH-60 Black Hawk Medevac helicopter from the Wisconsin Army National Guard, based out of West Bend, Wis., was used to locate John Rowland about 15 minutes after arriving in the search area. The van initially was found around 11:15 p.m. Feb. 24 on Forestville Road near Huron Woods Drive in Marquette Township. Assisting in the air search was a Cessna 172 operated by volunteer members of the Civil Area Patrol based out of Houghton. Rowland had been last seen in the city of Marquette at about 3:30 a.m. Feb. 23. Rowland’s body was transported to the UP Health System-Marquette morgue by Marquette Township Fire and Rescue. An autopsy is expected to be performed this week. The investigation is ongoing pending the results of the autopsy. Assisting in the search was the Civil Air Patrol and volunteers with Marquette County Search and Rescue, Marquette Township Fire and Rescue, and the public, many of whom shared information and tips.
