(IRON MOUNTAIN, MI.)–. Union members representing the The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE)marched near noon on Tuesday to bring attention to their concern, employees not being hired to fill vacant positions, especially in administration which is affecting healthcare at the Oscar G .Johnson VA Medical Center. The union has over 700,000 members. The purpose of today’s march was to bring awareness.. Earlier this year, in June, the Department of Veterans Affairs released a statement saying they were 34,000 vacancies total. VA’s Veterans Health Administration is the largest integrated throughout the healthcare system, with the VHA’s vacancy rate is about 9 percent, less than half the vacancy rate for private sector hospitals, which trend near 20-percent. “We are always looking for qualified medical professionals to fill positions that will meet patient needs.”
