(IRON MOUNTAIN, MI.)-– We Energies will test emergency sirens at its hydroelectric power plants on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Four of the company’s dams have flood emergency warning systems (FEWS) that require annual testing to ensure the sirens operate properly. Residents near Michigamme Falls, Twin Falls, Big Quinnesec and White Rapids dams may hear the sirens for approximately one minute.
This is only a test and does not require evacuation.
Because of the number of residents living within two miles of We Energies’ hydroelectric power plants, warning sirens have been installed to provide notification for evacuation.
In an actual emergency, sirens would sound continuously, and residents would be told to evacuate the area, move to higher ground and listen to the radio for instructions from emergency officials.
We Energies works closely with emergency officials to help keep residents safe in the unlikely event of a dam failure. Customers with questions can contact Pat Peterson in Hydro Operations at 906-284-1602.
